Fun, Educational Activities For Parents And Children

Children who receive lots of positive attention from the adults in their lives are more likely to develop a clear system of values and live a productive and satisfying life. Take a break from homework, housework, or wasting time and have some fun together! (There will be learning, too!)

Make Something-Apple Treats

Apple Crisp

6 apples
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg

Topping
¼ cup margarine (4 tablespoons)
1/3 cup sugar
¼ cup flour
½ cup quick oatmeal, uncooked
1 bread heel, chopped fine
½ cup nuts, chopped coarsely
non-stick cooking spray

  1. Peel and slice apples. Sprinkle lemon juice over the apples and toss to coat. (Lemon juice will prevent the apples from turning brown.)
  2. Mix together sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg and add to apples. Mix again.
  3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  4. Combine margarine, sugar and flour in a mixing bowl. Cut margarine into sugar and flour until mixture is crumbly.
  5. Add oatmeal, bread and nuts and mix thoroughly.
  6. Spray a 10x10 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Pour in apples. Spoon topping evenly over the apples.
  7. Place in hot oven and bake until topping is brown (approximately 20 minutes).

Caramel Apples

50 caramels (1 bag)
2 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)
1 pinch cloves (optional)
5 apples
5 popsicle sticks
1 sheet of aluminum foil
non-stick cooking spray

  1. Melt caramels in a saucepan along with water over medium-low heat, stirring constantly.
  2. Add chocolate chips and cloves if desired and stir until completely melted.
  3. Insert popsicle sticks into apples and swirl in melted caramel. Tilt the pan and use a spoon to completely cover apples. Place on aluminum foil that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.

Apple Cider

Per (large) Serving

2 cups unsweetened apple cider
¼ cup orange juice
1 tablespoon honey
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon cloves
1 cinnamon stick

  1. Heat apple cider, orange juice, honey, nutmeg and cloves in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Pour into mugs and add cinnamon stick.
