Waiting in Line - A Matter Of Culture
If you were waiting in line at the supermarket
in most countries and someone crowded in front
of you, you would identify that person as rude.
However, there are cultures where the concept
of queuing up and patiently waiting your turn
never crosses one's mind. Those unable to push
to the front of the line are simply out of luck.
My husband and I have always lived in the
western part of the United States. When my son
graduated from boot camp, we flew to Missouri to
attend his ceremony. While we were there, we
encountered something refreshing.
There was a section of road construction with
the usual signs alerting everyone of the narrowing
road ahead. To our amazement every single car
moved over into the proper lane and waited their
turn. We were surrounded by people who were
respectful of one another even within the
anonymity of their vehicles!
Wow, we thought, where are those selfish,
arrogant drivers who ignore the warnings and
continue passing the cars until they reach the
closure and then crowd their way into line?
(By the way, if you are one of the people who
let them merge, STOP IT! If everyone refused to
let them in and they were stuck, this
inconsiderate behavior would soon be eliminated).
I'm sure you can think of other examples where
different circumstances and different cultures
affect behavior. Share your stories topics@whatsfordinner.net

Positive Thinking - Talk It Up!
Generate a discussion on how great it is to learn.
Talk about things you know now, and how glad you
are that you do! Positive thoughts are a habit.
Help your child develop the habit of positive
thinking.
Just the fact that we HAVE to do something can
bring feelings of resentment. Adults can feel
that way about their work, and children, certainly,
can feel that way about school and learning. Periodic
uplifting discussions about the positive side
of education can build motivation.
However, if you child brings up the subject of
how bad school is
..LISTEN! You may hear
something you need to know!
