Fun, Educational Activities
For Parents And Children
Children who receive lots of positive attention from the adults in their
lives are more likely to develop a clear system of values and live a
productive and satisfying life. Take a break from homework, housework, or
wasting time and have some fun together! (There will be learning, too!)
Playing Card Math—Skill Building
Shuffle and lay out a deck of regular playing
cards face up on a table or other flat surface.
Take turns choosing card pairs that equal a Math
fact.
(Example: 5 + 2 = 7 - player picks up the 5
card and the 2 card and states the answer; OR 8 x
4 = 32 - player picks up the 8 card and the 4 card
and states the answer).
When all the cards have been cleared from the
table you may determine the winner by adding the
face value of each players' cards to find the
largest sum. (This is a good chance to practice
the skill of using a calculator).
The game can be played to name addition facts,
subtraction facts, or multiplication facts. For
players with beginning skills, limit the cards
used to those of smaller numbers. For more
advanced players, each turn can involve multi-step
problems.
(Example: 6 + 7 - 3 = 10 - player picks up the
6 card, the 7 card, and the 3 card and states the
answer).
Before starting the game, make a decision
whether face cards will all equal 10 or
jack = 11, queen = 12, king = 13.
