Growing Bones And Heavy Loads |
||||
|
When I was in elementary school I played the clarinet. I loved it and was faithful in my practice. My family was supportive and tolerant of the noises that emitted from my bedroom (hey, my sister tried the violin!) and my skill grew steadily. The bad news is that we lived down a dirt road and had to walk it every morning and evening to ride the school bus. It was only years later that x-rays revealed a scoliosis in my spine curving toward the left. That was the arm that carried my instrument each and every day. Today, many children lug heavy backpacks to and from school. Take a moment to consider what goes into those backpacks. Are there things that can be left at school or stay at home? Is the weight being carried evenly on both shoulders or is the pack slung onto one arm day after day? Learn more: |
