Offering Criticism - Tread Lightly
One of the most important factors in personal growth is the ability to
use constructive criticism. But the willingness to apply the
information has a lot to do with the way in which the criticism is
presented. Mary Poppins said it best with, "A spoonful of sugar helps
the medicine go down." Being sincerely complimented on things we do
well before hearing suggestions for change, helps to take the sting out of
the realization that others don't think we are perfect.
The second lesson for offering criticism comes from young Gerald McGrew
who says, "If I ran the zoo..." Avoid saying things like, "you
should...", "you shouldn't...", or "why don't you..." Instead try
phrasing your comment with what communication experts call "I messages."
"If I wanted to be sure the car didn't get scratched by some grit, I'd spray
it down good with the hose before applying the soapy cloth."
Practice making sincere compliments and then offering suggestions using
"I messages."
