Competition is easier to accept if you realize it is not an act of oppression or abrasion - I’ve worked with my best friends in direct competition.

My big brother, being the number one son, was the pride of my father's heart.  The fact that he is kind, generous, funny and smart made it easy for the rest of us to adore him just as much.  It was a situation, however that sparked competition.  I wanted my father's eyes to glow when he recounted my accomplishments, too.  My personal talents combined with extra-hard work gave me my reward.
