Complaining - Accept It Or Change It
I once worked as a manager at at small gift shop. One of my
co-workers was an energetic woman who had many years of experience in that
store. I had seniority by status, but she had seniority by years.
It was a difficult situation.
One thing new managers particularly enjoy is implementing new ideas with
the assurance that great improvements will result. Did great
improvements result? No. Were my ideas bad? I'll never
know. My co-worker completely disregarded any instructions regarding
change and cheerfully continued doing everything exactly as it had been done
in the past.
I complained. I complained to her (patiently explained the validity
of my ideas). I complained to the district manager (brainstormed ideas
on motivating her to adapt). I complained to my friends and family
(whined). Did any of my complaining improve the situation? No,
it actually made me more miserable than I already was. The end of the
story is that I decided to find a different job.
I couldn't change her behavior nor could I accept it, so I changed the
one thing that I could personally control. My participation in the
situation.
Can you think situations that are worth complaining about? Which
ones can you accept and which ones can you change?

Play A Number Game - Ends
Against The Middle
Player one names a three-digit number.
Player two creates a new three digit number following this pattern.
- Add the first digit to the middle digit and place the new number in
the hundreds place. (3+4=7)
- To determine the tens digit of your new number, add the first and last
digits of the original number (3+8=11) If your answer results in a
two digit number, add those numbers again. (1+1=2)
- Next add the last digit to the middle digit and place the new number
in the ones place (4+8=12, 1+2=3)
Player three uses the steps to create a new number.
- 7+2=9
- 7+3=10, 1+0=1
- 2+3=5
Keep repeating these steps. Did you ever get back to your original
number?
