Fun With Language - Idioms

"Hey egghead, did you pass the test?"
"Beats me! I'll know tomorrow. Until then I'm walking on pins and needles."

"Whoo hoo! Forgive me for tooting my own horn, but I passed with flying colors!"

An idiom is a word or a group of words that don't carry the meaning of their literal translation. In the above example no one has an unhatched bird sitting on his or her shoulders, there are no sewing implements strewn on the floor, nor is there a rainbow with wings. But we all know that a smart person got another A!

When I was substitute teaching, this was one of my favorite fill-in activities. The students had fun naming idioms and it seemed as if I heard new ones from each group. How many can your family name?

Learning Styles - What Is Yours?

Studies indicate that most students can identify their own learning styles. Ask yourselves how you think you learn best.

Does information stick with you when you listen to someone read, when you read something yourself, when you write things down, when you watch a movie, or when you perform an activity?
