Play A Word Game - Make A Chain

Player one names any word.

  • capital

Player two starts with any letter contained in the first word and creates a new word containing the same sequence of letters from the first word, scoring one point for each of the letters from the old word that moves into the new word.

  • tall would earn 3 points for the 't', the 'a', and the 'l' from the original word.
  • alter would earn 2 points.
  • last would earn 1 point.

The next player creates a new word that uses the ending letters from the word player two created.  We will use the word tall in our example.

  • tally would earn 4 points
  • allow would earn 3 points
  • llama would earn 2 points
  • laughter would earn 1 point

If all of your players are word wizards, part of the strategy would be to form words that share as many of the letters from the previous word as well as to create words that have awkward endings that prevent the next player from using as many letters for his or her new word.  If you are playing with younger players, offering a word that has common letters at the end will encourage them to create longer words and earn more points.

Syllogisms - Inaccurate Reasoning Circles

Take turns making up reasoning circles that aren't necessarily true.

  1. Mrs. Monroe is a teacher.
  2. Mrs. Monroe is a woman.
  3. All teachers are women.

You can see the mistake here, there are many teachers who are men.

  1. When it rains there are clouds in the sky.
  2. There are clouds in the sky now.
  3. It is raining now.

Of course, there can be clouds in the sky without rain falling.

Make up some of your own.
