Understanding Conflict – Adult/Child Conflicts
Think of a time when child(ren) and adult(s)
in your household did not agree and conflict was
the result. Discuss the goals and needs of the
parties involved.
Did each person understand the motives of the
other individuals in the situation?
Did each person understand the value of the
outcome to everyone involved?
You might want to start with this common
conflict, bedtime or curfew.
What are the needs involved here? Children and
parents might express these needs: independence,
structure, missing out on activities, promoting
good health, etc.
What are the goals involved here? A child might
want to discuss a television show with classmates
but it comes on after bedtime. A parent might want
some quiet time in the evening to work on a
project.
