Think of a time when child(ren) and adult(s) in your household did not agree and conflict was the result. Discuss the goals and needs of the parties involved.

Did each person understand the motives of the other individuals in the situation?
Did each person understand the value of the outcome to everyone involved?

You might want to start with this common conflict, bedtime or curfew.

What are the needs involved here? Children and parents might express these needs: independence, structure, missing out on activities, promoting good health, etc.

What are the goals involved here? A child might want to discuss a television show with classmates but it comes on after bedtime. A parent might want some quiet time in the evening to work on a project.
